And it has achieved this great feat in a remarkably short period of time.

So how has the humble jean come to conquer the world and become one of the most worn items of clothing in modern society? Here we take you through a quick history of the rise and rise of denim jeans.

Originally known as genes – as they originated in the Italian town of Genoa – jeans became popular amongst sailors in the area and were a particular favourite of employees in the French navy. However, their popularity really took off when an immigrant by the name of Levi Strauss began to manufacture jeans for American workers during the years of the Californian gold rush.

Denim jeans proved to be incredibly hard wearing and comfortable – perfect for the harsh, tough conditions of life on the new frontier of America. They also proved cheap to manufacture, and became incredibly popular amongst the American working class – perfectly adaptable to any manual labour.

Jeans really caught the public’s imagination in the 1940’s and 50’s when influential film stars began to wear them on the big screen. John Wayne and Clint Eastwood elevated denim jeans to international fame when they wore them in the incredibly popular Westerns of the era.

Real variety in the range of cuts, dyes and styles emerged in the 60’s as jeans became a staple fashion item of the era – symbolic of the counterculture that revolutionised the politics, culture and art of the times. This appeared to be the turning point for jeans, as they became items for everyday wear, rather than simply the preferred trousers of the working class.
